 In July 2014, IDF soldier Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul was killed in battle in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge and kidnapped by Hamas terrorists.

In January 2025, the IDF successfully recovered Oron from Gaza and returned him to Israel for a proper burial.

It has now been cleared for publication that, in a covert operation that led to Oron’s recovery, Israeli security forces detained a Hamas terrorist in Gaza who allegedly held Oron for nearly a decade. A prosecutor’s declaration has been filed against the terrorist ahead of a planned indictment.
