n a historic vote, the Israeli government formally recognized the Armenian Genocide: the murder of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, taking place primarily between 1915 and 1917 during World War I, with persecutions and deportations continuing until 1923. The resolution was brought forward by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and will now go before the Knesset for a vote.

"It is our moral obligation as Jews, and certainly as the state of the Jewish people, to adopt this decision," Sa'ar said.
Israel had long avoided recognizing the genocide due to diplomatic sensitivities with Turkey, which continues to deny it took place. With Sunday's vote, Israel joins 32 UN member states, including the United States, Canada, Germany, and Russia, in formally acknowledging one of history's darkest chapters. "It's never too late to do the right thing."
